Amanda Farías
for Speaker of the New York City Council
Leadership for a Stronger, Fairer, and More Collaborative New York City Council
As Majority Leader, Amanda Farias has led with vision, collaboration, and results - ensuring the Council delivers for working families, women, and communities of color across the five boroughs. Her leadership has been defined by progress that is practical, people-centered, and rooted in equity.
Now, Amanda is ready to take the next step - to lead the City Council into its next chapter as Speaker, bringing steady, inclusive, and accountable leadership to the table, authentically and effectively.
Our City Council is strongest when we govern together - when every member has a voice, every district has a seat at the table, and every New Yorker sees themselves in our work. As Speaker, Amanda will continue building a Council that leads with collaboration, invests in our neighborhoods, and delivers real solutions to the challenges New Yorkers face every day.
Her vision is simple:
A Council that centers working families - with policies that make childcare, housing, and transit more accessible and affordable.
A Council that champions equity - ensuring women, immigrants, and communities of color are at the core of our recovery.
A Council that governs with integrity and unity - where transparency, accountability, and partnership define how we lead.
Why I’m Running for Speaker
Amanda’s track record speaks for itself:
Economic Development & Workforce: As Chair of the Committee on Economic Development, Amanda has advanced strategic plans for equitable job growth, small business recovery, and the decarbonization of New York’s economy.
Gender Equity: As former Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus, she helped pass landmark legislation on universal childcare, menstrual equity, abortion rights, and survivor support. This is a priority she would like to see continued through policies like her expansive childcare plan, Council Cares, in the New York City Council.
Transportation Access: She sponsored and passed the law codifying NYC Ferry discount programs, ensuring affordability and access for working-class New Yorkers.
Community Investment: Delivered over $300 million in capital and discretionary funding for Bronx families, small businesses, and schools.
Co-Governance Model: Created a first-of-its-kind Co-Governance Community Leadership Program that puts residents at the center of decision-making, budgeting, and policy design. This is a practice she would like to see expanded councilwide, in conjunction with Participatory Budgeting in the New York City Council.
Record of Leadership
A Collaborative and Forward-Looking Council
Amanda believes that the Speaker’s office should reflect the diversity and strength of the Council itself - a chamber led by community centered elected’s, shaped by equity, and driven by results. Her approach to leadership is grounded in partnership: uplifting her colleagues, building consensus across boroughs, and ensuring every member can deliver for their communities.
